Virginia, Get Ready for REAL ID

REAL ID Overview

REAL ID is an enhanced form of identification, filling the same functions of a driver’s license with a few “extras.” In the state of Virginia, it’s not mandatory to obtain a REAL ID. However, beginning May 7, 2025, there are many instances where you will need one.

When You Need a REAL ID

Most people will need a REAL ID most often at the airport. A REAL ID is required to board a domestic flight. You’ll also need it to enter some secure federal facilities and military bases (unless they have developed their own security access requirements).

Getting a REAL ID

The easiest way to get a REAL ID is to apply at the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You can complete the application online ahead of time, but you’ll still need to visit the DMV with the required documentation. That documentation includes:

• Proof of identity
• Two proofs of Virginia residency
• One proof of legal presence
• Proof of your Social Security number

Your Existing Identification

If you don’t need a REAL ID, you don’t have to get one. You can still use your Virginia driver’s license when driving and when you vote or need to verify your identity. Also, you will still need a passport for international travel.
