Toyota Tundra Towing Safety Tips

Toyota Tundra Towing

The Toyota Tundra offers up to 12,000 pounds of towing power, but if you’re not prepared, towing heavy loads can be dangerous. Take these tips from our team at Casey Toyota to make towing safer and easier.

Checking Limits

If you’re not sure what your vehicle’s towing capacity is, check your owner’s manual. Towing more than the maximum will reduce your steering control and put more stress on your brakes, potentially leading to an accident. You also have to factor in the GCWR, or gross combined weight rating, which is the maximum load the vehicle can haul and tow, including passengers and anything in the truck bed.

Packing Properly

Distributing the cargo in your trailer unevenly will also lead to less control and maneuverability, even when you’re well under your towing limit. You should try to position around 60 percent of your cargo’s weight on the front half. Tongue weight is also important: depending on your hitch, you’ll need to aim for a tongue weight of around 10 to 15 percent.

Pre-Towing Tests

Before you head off on a big job or weekend adventure, ensure that all of your vehicle’s systems are ready to tow. Check all of your tires, including those on your trailer, to ensure they’re in their pressure range and have someone help you check the lights on both your truck and your trailer. If your trailer has separate brakes, check that the emergency breakaway cable is attached correctly.
