Servicemembers Civil Relief Act

While the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) was enacted in 2003, the idea dates back to 1940. You have already given so much to our country, so the act was designed to limit financial burdens. Many active-duty service members have found this beneficial, especially if they receive a PCS. That said, there are some rules and regulations you should know.

Transferring Within CONUS

If you’re transferring within the Continental United States, your loan or lease will continue as before. One thing to consider: if you’re leasing and your new duty station is distant from your current one – let’s say Norfolk to San Diego – you may want to have your car shipped rather than driving it out, because that single drive can take a significant bite out of your mileage allowance. Also, remember that you’ll need to make maintenance and lease-end arrangements closer to your new home. We can help with that, too. If you have a loan, on the other hand, no worries – aside from a change of address, things will continue as before.

Transferring Outside CONUS

Here’s where things get complex. Most loans and leases won’t allow a car to leave the country. While you can terminate your lease if your next deployment is overseas for more than 180 days, you can’t do the same with a loan. You’ll have to either sell the car privately or bring it to a Toyota dealership like ours (we’ll buy from you even if you’re not buying from us).
